New York town completes design on $35 million library renovation

City leaders in Bethlehem, New York, are considering a $35.4 million renovation of its public library to update the 50-year-old building, add more space and enhance accessibility and environmental sustainability.

The proposed updates would add a pair of community rooms that will increase capacity to 250, and build east and west entries for the facility.

Plans also call for the expansion of the children’s and teen’s library by a combined 8,403 square feet —an effort that will require the addition of a multi-use room, an area for children’s crafts, storage, toilet and a lactation room.

The completed schematic design also seeks to address the outdated and aging aspects of the facility, including removing asbestos and demolishing the mezzanine that is no longer suitable for the public or staff.

Plans also call for consideration of a trio of HVAC options to increase the building’s energy efficiency. The final schematic design also calls for two dedicated staff areas and a maintenance room.
