FTA provides $110 million in disaster relief aid to public transportation providers

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will allocate $110 million to eight public transportation providers and DOTs in six states and one territory that have been affected by natural disasters.

The funding comes from the Public Transportation Emergency Relief (ER) program and will cover repairs, equipment replacement and reimbursement from emergency services due to disasters that occurred in 2017 and between 2020 and 2022.

“Americans cannot stop their lives because a disaster damages their transit systems,” FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez said in a statement. “We know it is critical to fund recovery efforts for these systems, so they can keep taking Americans to work, school, doctors’ appointments and other important destinations.”

New Jersey Transit Corp. will receive $75 million to build a rail maintenance of way (MOW) facility in Clifton that will replace an obsolete and flood-prone MOW facility in Wood-Ridge. The current 70-year-old facility was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ida in 2021. The new energy-efficient, state-of-the-art facility is currently in the design phase.

Plaquemines Port Harbor & Terminal District in Louisiana will receive $18.6 million for the Pointe á la Hache Ferry Crossing, which had been damaged by several storms, including Tropical Storm Harvey and Hurricane Ida.

Among the other projects that received funds:

Puerto Rico Highways and Transportation Authority will receive $13.2 million to repair the Tren Urbano rail system and facilities, which were damaged by hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Hillsborough County, Florida, will receive $2.1 million to recoup costs from the Hillsborough Regional Transit (HART), which provided emergency services during Hurricane Ian.
