FAA releases almost $187 million for airport modernization projects

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released grants totaling $186.7 million for airports in 34 states. The money comes from the Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program as a part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).

Grants will help make improvements to the airports’ terminals, baggage systems, safety systems and other infrastructure upgrades.

“These grants not only invest in the physical infrastructure of our airports, but also in strengthening safety and improving efficiency for travelers, and help the economy thrive,” FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Shannetta R. Griffin said in a statement.

Michigan’s Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport will receive $61.8 million to rehabilitate an on-airport roadway. The renovation will create a path for safety and service vehicles to operate.

The San Diego International Airport will use $23.5 million in grants to construct a terminal. The building will be over 1.2 million square feet, with 30 gates and related areas.

Pittsburgh International Airport will reconstruct an existing terminal building with $20.5 million in grants. The project plans to increase efficiency for passengers and baggage and upgrade energy and infrastructure in 30 gates.

Other notable awards include:

$19.7 million to Kodiak Airport in Alaska will fund reconstructing a taxiway to comply with FAA design standards and enhance safety.

$8.1 million to Portland International Jetport in Maine to help rehabilitate a portion of taxiway to meet FAA standards and improve safety through various other airfield projects such as lighting installation.

$6.1 million to Tucson International Airport in Arizona to fund the reconstruction and relocation of a runway to achieve an 800-foot centerline separation from another runway.

These awards are a part of $25 billion for airport improvements as a part of the BIL. Almost $9 billion of the $15 billion AIG funding has already been delivered to airports across the U.S.
