The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is making $100 million available to support wildlife crossings throughout the United States. A Notice of Funding Opportunity opened earlier this month and closes Sept. 4, 2024.
The funds come from the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program (WCPP), which supports projects that protect wildlife from being struck by vehicles. Projects include wildlife crossings over and under roadways, adding fencing and employing tracking and mapping technology.
Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the WCPP will make a total of $350 million available through 2026.
The FHWA made $110 million in grants available for 19 wildlife crossing projects in 17 states, including four Tribes late last year.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation received the largest share of funds – $24.3 million – to build five underpasses, one overpass and install high-barrier wildlife fencing along 30 miles of U.S. 189 in the southwest part of the state.
