The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is making $17 million available for state departments of transportation to implement advanced digital construction management systems.
Advanced digital construction management systems are digital technology and processes to manage construction and engineering projects, including systems for planning and coordination, design, construction and asset management.
“It also includes the development and support of systems to enhance and share data across an asset’s lifecycle and between organizational silos, also referred to as maximizing interoperability,” the FHWA said.
The FHWA has opened a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for $17 million in grants through the Advanced Digital Construction Management Systems Program. The deadline to apply is July 30, 2024.
The program awarded $34 million in fiscal year 2022 and 2023 to 10 states. Notable projects include:
$4.5 million to Illinois to establish a continuously operating reference system (CORS) network that will work with ongoing implementation of 3D modeling, LiDAR, and small unmanned aircraft systems.
$3.9 million for the California Department of Transportation – known as Caltrans – to develop technology that will allow the agency to combine data from planning, design and construction projects throughout the state.
$3.9 million to Pennsylvania to apply an open data standard that will eliminate the need for expensive proprietary technologies that make it difficult to exchange information between design and construction teams.
