Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has announced the start of construction on its $9 billion capital improvement plan, DFW Forward, marking the airport’s largest capital investment since opening in 1974. The comprehensive plan aims to transform the airport with modernized terminals, expanded facilities and enhanced connectivity to accommodate growing passenger traffic and improve overall airport operations.
The DFW Forward program includes over 180 projects aimed at enhancing airport infrastructure, aesthetics and the overall customer experience. By the numbers, DFW Forward will deliver 24 new gates, 28 rebuilt or reconstructed gates, one new terminal, parkway modernization, renewable energy powered cooling, two new fire stations and other infrastructure and efficiency improvements.
Demonstrated during the High-C area reconstruction project in 2022, airport authorities anticipate an emphasis on modular construction techniques will bring enhanced project and cost efficiency, improved quality and reduced operational impacts on everyday airport proceedings.
The centerpiece of DFW Forward is the reimagining of Terminal C. Partnering with American Airlines and other collaborators, an estimated $3 billion will be used to transform the outdated terminal into a modern, spacious and elevated experience. The plan calls for the removal of more than 400 view-blocking pillars, installing new dynamic glass windows and raising the roof throughout the terminal. Customers can also expect all-new facilities including shopping amenities, lounge space, check-in areas, security checkpoints and improved restrooms. The Terminal C project will be completed in three phases and is expected to be completed in full by 2030.
Terminal C’s expansion and renovation also includes the complete reconstruction of the adjacent south parking garage and a dual pier expansion of Terminal A and C, which will add over 250,000 square feet, rebuild ten existing gates and tally nine new gates combined. Construction on Terminal A will start during the first phase of Terminal C’s construction cycle which is set to begin later this year. Both Terminal A and C’s pier expansions are expected to open in 2026.
Simultaneously, DFW is looking to begin construction on a new sixth terminal, Terminal F, this year. The estimated $1.6 billion project will be located in the southwestern portion of the Central Terminal area and will support the growth of airlines and the North Texas region. Terminal F will feature a new-to-DFW linear-design concourse with 15 gates, a Skylink station, modernized systems and expanded concessions for consumers. Terminal F is expected to complete construction and open to the public in 2027.

The Electric Central Utility Plant project will develop an airport-wide electric cooling system that runs off 100% renewable energy resources.
The East West Connector Roadway project will create a new east-west road thoroughfare that connects Rental Car Drive to State Highway 360.
The Southwest End-Around Taxiway Project will embark on a multi-phase construction program to enhance the safety and efficiency of airplane movements while on the ground and in the air.
The Fire Station Modernization project will add two new fire stations on either side of the central airfield locations to improve efficiency and protection of essential equipment and personnel.
The 19th Street Cargo Redevelopment project will nearly double the amount of space for cargo aircraft at the airport, including seven new positions designed for the world’s largest cargo aircraft.
With over 180 projects planned, DFW’s expansion projects are set to reimagine the airport’s infrastructure, enhance operational efficiency and support the North Texas region’s growth, ultimately contributing to a superior experience for the 73 million DFW travelers every year.
