Virginia assembles artificial intelligence task force

Virginia is putting together a new artificial intelligence (AI) task force, which was called for by Executive Order 30 issued by Governor Glenn Youngkin, to provide advice to leaders on the emerging technology. 

The AI task force is made up of 10 of the Commonwealth’s most prominent AI experts from universities, non-profits and private corporations. 

These volunteers will provide advice to policymakers on how to make Virginia the leader in the AI space and ensure the technology is used responsibly.

The task force will meet twice a year and provide recommendations on Virginia’s AI policy, serving as a resource for both the executive and legislative branches as they consider new AI solutions for functions of government, laws and other standards and guidelines. 

The inaugural task force includes the following members: 

John Bailey – Founder, Vestigo Partners. 

Bill Cleveland – Former Vice Mayor, Alexandria, Va. 

Richard Culatta – CEO, International Society for Technology in Education. 

Zach Graves – Executive Director, Foundation for American Innovation. 

Sam Hammond – Senior Economist, Foundation for American Innovation. 

Tim Hwang – Senior Technology Fellow, Institute for Progress. 

Jamil Jaffer – Professor, Antonin Scalia Law School at GMU. 

Lori Jennings – Founder, Jennings ProSearch. 

Paige Kowalski – Executive VP, Data Quality Campaign. 

Naren Ramakrishnan – Professor of Engineering, Virginia Tech. 

The task force will offer guidance and advice on topics including legislation to address AI policy, any programs that would expand the use of AI across state government and ongoing developments in the AI space, including any AI policy adopted by nation, state or local government entities.
