The city of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is planning to spend more than $50 million on improving public safety facilities over the next five years, including the construction of new police and fire stations. City Manager Fox Simons said the city expects to break ground on a new $26.5 million, 27,000-square-foot fire station next year.
The money will be spent during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 fiscal years, according to city reports.
“We’re talking about putting a shovel in the ground for the fire station in 2026,” Simons said.
The six-bay facility will replace Fire Station No. 1. It is being built next to and in conjunction with Coast RTA’s new facility, which will include a 12-bay transit center and administrative offices.
The shared facility will be located on 18.7 acres near the intersection of Robert Grissom Parkway and Executive Avenue.
The five-year capital improvement plan and FY 2024-25 budget make no reference to a new police station, but the Myrtle Beach City Council recently discussed replacing the 43-year-old Ted Collins Law Enforcement Center at its Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Retreat.
The city is expected to budget $25 million for design, engineering and property acquisition for the new station in fiscal year 2027.
Simons said the new facility could be up to 80,000 square feet.
The $25 million price tag does not include the actual construction cost.
