Arizona is taking a collaborative approach to oversight as lawmakers seek to guide the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) across the nation. New Arizona committee to shape AI’s integration in government
With the launch of its new oversight committee, the state seeks to develop ethical, secure and innovative frameworks for AI integration across government systems, reflecting a growing national trend toward responsible AI governance at the state level.
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs announced the inaugural AI Steering Committee in May to ensure the ethical and effective use of AI technologies in government systems. Driving the state’s future AI efforts, the committee is helmed by various state officials representing higher education, police and law enforcement, technology sectors, and public and private industries.
As the committee’s role becomes clearer, Arizona is taking a unique approach to committee-building, utilizing voices from a variety of departments to collaboratively build AI guidance.
The state’s AI Steering Committee will feature officials from the Department of Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Commerce and the State Data and Analytics Office, as well as contributions from several higher education representatives. Combined, the new committee appointees seek to provide a whole-of-government approach to enhancing emerging technologies, information technology systems, cybersecurity and data gathering and protection.
Other states around the country, such as Texas and Florida, are implementing oversight committees and strategic frameworks to ethically integrate AI technologies in government.
Texas’ oversight efforts, primarily directed through the House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, focuses on the economic, ethical and societal impacts of AI on Texas residents, businesses and municipalities. Delivering testimony to the Texas Legislature last year, the committee seeks additional state-level guidance and strategic policymaking to address data privacy, workforce development, cybersecurity and infrastructure.
In Florida, lawmakers’ journey to advance AI oversight and develop guidance began in 2024, when the legislature established the Government Technology Modernization Council. Led by several state officials, the advisory council provides recommendations to policymakers that accelerate AI’s adoption, promote the deployment and development of AI technologies and protect Floridians from harmful actors utilizing AI.
While states continue to pursue comprehensive AI strategies, the effects of AI on residents around the country will be noticeable. Both federal and state governments are pushing for enhanced integration in government systems; though, these future efforts and initiatives will be guided by the findings of federal, state and local AI advisory committees and councils.
