New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced nearly $300 million in funding earlier this month to advance healthcare initiatives throughout the state. The awards will support more than 50 projects through the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program IV, covering efforts to expand inpatient, primary, long-term health and behavioral health services.
According to the announcement, the funding gave special consideration to projects that improve access to these services, along with projects that support community-based and financially struggling healthcare providers. Projects that focus on expanding patient-centered care and modernizing infrastructure also received priority status.
Major projects receiving funds include Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Delaware Valley Hospital Inc. and Episcopal Health Services Inc., which is expanding and modernizing St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Queens.
Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will receive $28.4 million, the largest award of this funding round, to modernize its infrastructure and equipment. Planned improvements include replacing a parking garage with a more modern structure, creating a 12-bed unit to house intermediate care patients, renovating several surgical units and enhancing the Women’s Health Pavilion. The facility will also add new backup generators and add an enclosure to the Emergency Department for better privacy and patient experience.
Episcopal Health Services Inc. will receive $27.2 million to expand and improve the critical care unit at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Queens. The hospital is located in a predominantly underserved neighborhood, with modernizations intended to improve the facility’s ability to treat the most critically ill patients. The renovations will add state-of-the-art technology to the unit, along with expanded capacity.
Delaware Valley Hospital Inc., slated for $20 million in funds, will focus on building what it calls a medical neighborhood. The hospital operates in a rural area where patients often drive long distances for medical care. To address this, the hospital plans to launch capital improvements that will expand its community and drive-thru pharmacy network. It will also relocate and expand patient registration areas to better serve patients in otherwise hard-to-reach areas.
Other notable projects include:
St. Joseph’s Hospital, Yonkers ($19.7 million) – Renovating and modernizing operating room equipment to improve safety and patient outcomes.
Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center ($18.3 million) – Modernizing and relocating maternity services, critical care and lab services onto one floor at the Ogdensburg campus.
Valley Health Services Inc ($17.1 million) – Constructing a replacement nursing facility with 20-bed households, a 40-bed rehabilitation neighborhood and a 40-bed neurobehavioral unit.
Wyoming County ($14.8 million) – Upgrading infrastructure of the hospital’s operating rooms, pharmacy and emergency department.
Flushing Hospital Medical Center ($11.5 million) – Renovating and modernizing the Critical Care Unit.
Erie County Medical Center Corporation ($10.9 million) – Constructing an Inpatient Trauma Psychiatric Unit along with other renovations.
Monroe Community Hospital ($10.2 million) – Increasing pediatric bed capacity in the Finger Lakes region through renovation and revitalization of the Friendship Building and grounds.
Since 2017, the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program has awarded more than $4.7 billion to providers working to improve access, equity and quality of care across New York. The New York State Department of Health and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York administer these funds. The state is currently accepting applications on a rolling basis for additional projects under the Safety Net Transformation Program, while future rounds of Health Care IT projects under phases IV and V are expected to be announced.
