Little rock advances plans for new district court facility downtown

The Little Rock Board of Directors in Arkansas is moving forward with plans to acquire an existing building and parking lot for a new district courthouse as part of a larger plan to revamp downtown while securing more modern functional facilities. The project follows voter approval of a bond issue nearly three years ago that included district court funding.

The new Little Rock District Courts will be housed at 525 West Capitol Avenue, with its adjacent parking at 600 West 6th Street. The purchase is part of a $16.45 million plan to design, fully renovate and construct with contingencies in mind. The total also includes management and furnishings. Officials are hoping for completion by around 2028.

The existing Markham Street courthouse is slated for demolition contingent on the timing of opening the new facility.

No specific designers or architects have been announced, but following this purchase announcement, city leaders expect to move toward a schematic design phase in early 2026, with a request for proposals to follow.
