The Denali Commission’s Broadband Funding program bridges the digital divide in rural Alaskan communities. Through strategic planning and the build-out of modern broadband capabilities, this program enhances connectivity, fostering economic growth and improving access to essential services. Administered by the Denali Commission, this effort is part of a larger endeavor to ensure that all Americans can participate in the digital economy.
The commission has issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) of $35.8 million to support an estimated 60 projects that promise to revolutionize broadband access in underserved areas. The deadline to apply is April 12, 2024.
The program welcomes a broad array of projects related to broadband planning and build-out. Eligible entities include states, counties, cities/townships, special districts, Tribal governments, public higher-education institutions and various nonprofits.
The Denali Commission has previously supported projects, including:
$1.5 million to the Naknek Electric Association to rebuild a 5.15-mile electric distribution line and install updated powerhouse switcthgear in King Salmon.
$285,000 to Bethel Community Services Foundation to support the development of a Multi-Tribal Hazard Mitigation Plan.
$708,000 to the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative to install and commission a grid bridging system in the Quinhagak powerhouse.
