The University of California Board of Regents has approved construction of a $1.49 billion project to modernize a hospital complex on the UCSF Health Oakland campus.
The project includes a new seven-story, 277,500-square-foot UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital building, a separate three-story, 31,300-square-foot administrative building, and a parking structure with a rooftop helistop for emergency intake. Additionally, the project will renovate portions of the existing patient tower, diagnostic and treatment building, and invest in MRI equipment and other technology for an improved emergency room.
“The new hospital project is our covenant to the community to provide the best care available for all kids, regardless of their socioeconomic level,” said Nicholas Holmes, MD, president of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals. “We are investing in this hospital to expand access to world-class care for any child for generations to come.”
The hospital building will have 137 single-patient rooms and internal space for families to stay with their child while receiving care. There will be some rooms to accommodate families with multiple children requiring care. An expanded emergency department will double the space provided for trauma care. The hospital will feature updated imaging and surgical services with a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and seven surgical suites. There will be an addition of a 20-bed behavioral health unit.
The modernization project includes necessary campus-wide infrastructure upgrades and will meet modern seismic safety standards.
The hospital building will be LEED Gold Certified and feature a sustainable design to reduce energy consumption, water usage and waste. The parking structure will have 120 electric vehicle charging spaces and nearby bicycle parking.
Construction on the hospital building will begin this year. The hospital will be complete in 2030 and accept its first patients in 2031. Construction of the parking structure and renovations of the patient tower and diagnostic and treatment building will begin after the new hospital building is complete. The new administrative building will provide dedicated office space for physicians and staff and is expected to open in 2026.
The UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital is a Level 1 trauma center and pediatric safety net hospital affiliated with the University of California. The modernization project will ensure the historic hospital can continue to provide exceptional care for Bay Area children as it has for more than 100 years.
