Howard University in Washington, D.C., is moving forward with plans to build a $650 million hospital on its Georgia Avenue campus.
The 200-bed, 252,000-square-foot hospital will be built in front of the current hospital, which will remain open while the new facility is constructed. The new and existing hospitals will be connected and will be used as an integrated academic medical center.
The new hospital will feature a Level 1 trauma center and an academic teaching hospital to better integrate the hospital with the university. The university will invest more in support staff, equipment and facility buildout to create five “Centers of Excellence,” which will focus on sickle cell, women’s health, oral health, trauma and violence prevention, and substance use and co-occurring disorders.
The project is currently in the design phase, with construction expected to begin late 2025 and complete in 2028.
