Texas A&M regents OK $258 million in construction projects

Texas A&M University System regents approved $258 million in construction projects at campuses in Galveston, Laredo, San Antonio and Corpus Christi earlier this week.

Plans call for a new engineering building in Galveston, a health sciences building in Laredo, a public health and education building in San Antonio, and an arts and media facility in Corpus Christi.

Contractors and builders for these projects have not been selected, Texas A&M University System Vice Chancellor of Marketing and Communications Laylan Copelin told Government Market News.

There are currently more than $4.1 billion in construction projects in the planning, design, construction or development phase across the Texas A&M University System.

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Arts & Media Building will cost $81 million

The building will house undergraduate and graduate programs, including music, theater and dance programs.

Plans include a proscenium theater, a recital hall, a black box theater and a dance studio in the two-story facility. It will also include rehearsal halls and theater labs for instruction in costume construction and makeup, as well as faculty and administrative staff offices and support areas.

Construction is set to start in April with completion by March 2026.

The $51 million Engineering Classroom & Research Building at Texas A&M University at Galveston will house the freshman engineering, environmental engineering, ocean engineering and computer science and engineering programs. Construction will begin in March with completion scheduled for November 2025.

Several health sciences programs will be housed in the $71 million Health Sciences Education & Research Center & Western Hemispheric Trade Center Expansion at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, including kinesiology, communication disorders and public health. The building will have classrooms, demonstration rooms and research labs to meet increased enrollment. The facility will also allow for an expansion of health sciences offerings in the future, including occupational therapy and clinical lab sciences, helping address the health needs of Laredo.

With the expansion of the Western Hemispheric Trade Center, two other buildings, including an entrepreneurial incubator, will be combined to accommodate growing business school programs. Construction on both will begin in March and be completed by December 2025.

A $55 million Public Health and Education Building Project at Texas A&M University-San Antonio will include classrooms, labs and support spaces for the College of Education and Public Health. The new facility will support the launch of a new academic program in public health aimed at addressing the comorbidities and health disparities that exist in South Bexar County. As part of a partnership between A&M-San Antonio and Texas A&M Public Health, this facility will provide the necessary facilities to prepare high-quality public-health scientists, educators and specialists for Texas’ workforce shortages in public health, healthcare management, and STEM+H as well as to improve quality of life and health.

Construction is scheduled to start in March with completion anticipated in January 2026.
