The city of Pearland will use $17.6 million for Phase 2 of the Hickory Slough Sportsplex, which includes building additional fields and expanding park facilities. The funds were approved as part of the city’s $181 million bond package. Currently in the design phase, the project will go to bid January 2025. Construction will begin June 2025.
The city will expand the Hickory Slough Sportsplex by adding six lighted sports fields – four soccer fields and two multipurpose fields – inside the park’s regional detention pond. Half of the fields will use synthetic turf while the other half will use natural turf. The city will also add more parking, build a pavilion and expand the restroom and concession facilities.
Plans also include building a small maintenance building, a playground, a picnic area and lighting for three existing sports fields and parking lots. The city will add greenspace, including shade and ornamental trees, shrubs, groundcover and a sod farm.
The city will install a gate entrance connected to the expanded parking lot, as well as evaluate the park’s trees, sidewalks and stairs to ensure the park is well-connected. Plans also include building a retaining wall along the site’s fire lane. The expansion will cover 25 acres.
Because the sportsplex uses a portion of the regional detention facility, Phase 2 of the project includes installing additional drainage. The drainage component was approved as part of the 2019 Bond Program and is being designed under a separate contract. The drainage project will increase the detention facility by 95 acres-feet, expanding the facility’s stormwater capacity to 248 acre-feet.
