The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced the availability of $600 million in Fiscal Year 2026 Flood Mitigation Assistance Swift Current funding to help states, territories and federally recognized tribes fund projects that reduce future flood damage in communities recently affected by federally declared flood disasters.
Funding supports projects that reduce or eliminate future flood damage to properties insured through the National Flood Insurance Program. Eligible activities include acquiring and demolishing flood-prone buildings, elevating structures above expected flood levels, floodproofing nonresidential buildings and other mitigation measures that reduce repetitive flood losses.
To be eligible, applicants must have received a flood-related major disaster or emergency declaration between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2027. FEMA will establish application deadlines with each eligible applicant.
Priority will be given to projects that address repetitive flood losses, particularly structures that have sustained multiple flood insurance claims.
States, territories and tribal governments serve as applicants for the program and may submit projects on behalf of eligible local governments and property owners.
The FY 2026 funding opportunity also includes administrative changes intended to reduce application burdens for eligible applicants, including allowing application periods to be consolidated when multiple qualifying disasters occur during the funding cycle.
