The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program has released a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for FY 2024 totaling $1.3 billion. This round of grants is allocated for local governments and school districts to support planning and demonstration activities as well as projects to prevent fatal and serious-injury crashes.
SS4A is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which set aside $5 billion over five years. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has already awarded $1.7 billion to over 1,000 communities since FY 2022.
There are two types of grants available: Planning and demonstration grants (up to $580 million available) will fund the development of safety action plans to identify and solve the most pressing safety issues in a community. Implementation grants (up to $680 million available) will fund projects and strategies laid out in a required action plan to aid road safety.
Planning and demonstration grants have three deadlines — April 4, 2024; May 16, 2024; and Aug. 29, 2024. For implementation grants, the deadline is May 16, 2024. The NOFO closes Aug. 29, 2024.
Past projects include safety studies for regional high injury corridors, adding data to regional safety data systems and developing a Vision Zero toolkit.
