Federal officials are advancing nationwide efforts to improve Americans flying experiences, including upgrades to make airports safer and more family friendly.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced May 18 a $970 million investment for airports nationwide through the Airport Terminal Program, a federal grant program funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
The 133 awards were distributed across 45 states and support projects ranging from major terminal expansions to passenger amenity upgrades. While the IIJA funds support large-scale work such as a 20-gate concourse and related infrastructure at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and terminal connector walkways and retail space improvements at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, several projects also align with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s December push to make air travel easier for families.
That initiative calls for airports to add features such as children’s play areas, nursing rooms, family security screening lanes and other passenger-focused improvements designed to create a more convenient travel experience.
One example is Boston’s General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport, which is receiving $103.6 million for HVAC upgrades, baggage and ticketing improvements and terminal expansion work. Of that total, $2.8 million will be used to renovate four Kidport play areas and improve amenities for children.
Another major recipient is Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which was awarded nearly $82 million for projects including a zero-carbon electric utility plant, HVAC upgrades and partial terminal construction. About $8 million of that funding will support renovations to 37 restrooms that include family-friendly features.
Smaller airports are also receiving funding. Tupelo Regional Airport in Mississippi was awarded $2 million for terminal expansion that includes a family-friendly screening lane.
The IIJA airport terminal funds were created to improve safety, accessibility, energy efficiency and overall airport infrastructure, but this round also reflects the department’s push for family-centered upgrades that Duffy says could help usher in a “golden age” of air travel.
