U.S federal government officials announced earlier this month a $22 billion federal airport overhaul project for Dulles International Airport in Virginia, seeking to fully rebuild one of the largest airports in the National Capital Region.
In the proposed revitalization plan shared with airlines this May, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) detailed an expansion for its largest terminal, including construction of four new concourses.
Tthe terminal expansion plan also calls for a new transportation system to connect passengers to airport gates and amenities, extending the existing Aerotrain to connect all concourses underground while removing the infamous mobile lounges, all part of a sweeping overhaul expected to be completed by 2034.
The MWAA already approved a long-term master plan last July with $7 billion planned for various capital improvement projects, however it appears the federal government is stepping in with ambitious plans with more funding and a shorter timeline.

Federal officials have been discussing revitalization since December with the vision of improving the reputation of the airport and its facilities. Airport officials anticipate releasing additional details, funding and project timelines for the terminal expansion and airport overhaul in the coming months.
Opened in 1962, Dulles International Airport sits 29 miles from downtown Washington D.C. and is a large hub for international travel. The airport covers over 13,000 acres making it the third largest in the U.S. in 2025 the airport set a record serving over 29 million passengers.
