Pinellas County officials in Florida provided an update to St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport’s terminal expansion earlier this week as project teams continue the planning phase for the $145 million project.
The original $110 million concept called for a larger terminal expansion with new gates, a consolidated TSA checkpoint and a second boarding level. The revised plan scales that vision into a phased modernization effort focused first on renovating existing facilities and adding more targeted improvements.
After the project’s estimated cost nearly doubled during its first year of planning, Pinellas County officials opted to rescope the project to align with available federal and local funding. The updated plan is expected to cost up to $145 million. County commissioners are seeking nearly $4.9 million in additional federal infrastructure funding to advance design work, while airport officials expect roughly $110 million in FAA grants and about $35 million from airport reserves and local matching funds to support construction.
The revised project is designed to accommodate continued passenger growth at PIE, which has seen traffic increase by more than 50% over the past decade. Planned improvements include a second-story expansion above baggage claim, additional hold-room seating and concession space, upgrades to baggage claim, ticketing and rental car areas, jet bridge replacements and improvements to parking, plumbing and fire-safety systems.
Pre-construction design activity could begin as early as January 2027.
